In a nutshell: Telecom ® has had some security problems with Yahoo! Xtra ®

Because of the problems and issues, Telecom ® is changing some settings on how email clients such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird etc connect to receive and send messages.

Simply put, if you use a program like these to access your email you may experience problems until you update your settings.

If you need some simple advice on changing your settings, you're at the right place.

    What went wrong
Understanding what went wrong can help you determine the best course of action to take looking forward. What we know so far is:

  • Telecom ® contracts with Yahoo! ® to power the Xtra ® email service.
  • A number of breaches have happened within the past year.
  • According to Stuff.co.nz:
"...it won't matter if customers secure their accounts and change their passwords, or even stop using Xtra altogether and switch to alternative services such as Google's Gmail. Their friends, family and colleagues are likely to continue to receive malware-infested spam that appears as though it is coming from their Xtra addresses."
In other words, you might want to consider switching providers after you get your Xtra email running again, especially if you have lost confidence in Telecom ®'s offerings.

  • Fixing SSL Settings and Dealing with Security Errors

    Before we begin:

    I. Ensure you're online and able to access the internet. If you can't access the web, it's unlikely your email will work.

II. If you access your email only by visiting the Yahoo! Xtra ® website through your browser these steps won't be necessary according to Telecom ®, so why not take the time now to consider switching providers instead?

Enabling SSL Within Your Email Client

While the step-by-step instructions vary depending on which client you use, the settings to be changed are the same.

If you've set up your email program before and are comfortable changing settings on your own, proceed with the information below. If you're not so sure what you're doing, our advice would be to contact a tech-savvy friend for help. Your experience and settings could vary, so this information is provided "as is."

Enable SSL for Incoming mail - the port number should be 995

Enable SSL for Outgoing mail - the port number should be 465

Ensure your correct username and password are still filled in

Ensure 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) are selected if present

Don't tick the box titled 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication'

You should now be able to access your email.

May we again suggest considering switching providers?
